There are 4 parking areas situated at Hot Water Beach. The first which is off Domain Road is approximately one kilometre before the beach with Domain Road running off to the left as you approach the last hill in Hot Water Beach Road. This carpark is free to use, provides access to the springs on the beach without having to cross any stream and has a small toilet situated in the carpark.
The second which is quite large is called the Taiwawe carpark, named after the stream that encircles it and is also a free carpark with access to the beach and hot springs via what is known as the Pa Track. There are portaloo toilets located in the trees at the commencement of the Pa track to the beach. From this carpark it is at least a 5 minute walk to the shops, more toilets and other facilities.
The third, situated just over the single lane bridge and on the left is quite small, has a grass surface, no facilities but is a pleasant place to picnic with some shade trees and a short road walk to the shops and main carpark facilities.
The fourth and main beach carpark is a large tarsealed carpark with toilets, showers and with a shop and gallery nearby. However this is a 24 hour “PAY & DISPLAY” carpark with a charge of $2 per hour or $15 per day. This carpark is the closest to the beach and is where the surf life saving members are currently domiciled when on duty. To access the hot springs from this carpark it is sometimes necessary to ford the stream which flows across the beach which can be reasonably deep after heavy rain in the previous 24 hours.
Freedom camping, which includes sleeping in a car or camper van, is prohibited in all Hot Water Beach carparks as well as on roadsides, reserves and the beach and surrounds. The penalty for doing so is a NZ$200 fine. Refer to the CAMPING section of this website for further information.
